Summer Reading for Birth to 5

Dear Parents and Caregivers:
Welcome to Summer Reading 2008!

  • Reading to your young child is a special experience. Sharing stories develops language skills, helps kids get ready for school, and is fun!
  • Sign Up here to join your library’s summer reading program. Browse our booklists and visit your public library for more great books and ideas.
  • Share books, share ideas.  Read and write reviews of the books you are reading and connect with other parents and children.
  • Do More On this site you’ll find activities, fingerplays, and crafts to use with your books, advice from librarians, and ideas for summer field trips

Reading to your baby, toddler or preschooler is a wonderful early learning experience. While listening to a story from a caring reader, children are learning much that will help get them ready for school.

They are learning how books work, developing language skills, discovering the structure of stories, and having fun. All of these rich experiences build the foundations of future learning, particularly reading.

Summer is a wonderful time for reading together as family, since many of us have more time and are more relaxed. Take books with you on long family car trips, picnics to the beach, or outings to your favorite park. Encourage older siblings to read to their younger brothers and sisters. This will improve everyone’s reading skills.

While you’re on this site, register your children for Summer Reading. You’ll also find suggestions for great books for young children, printable reading logs to record what your family reads together, and other fun activities.

So pull out your favorite books, find a comfy place to sit and ENJOY!
